Mrs. Smith's Tips...

Mrs. Smith really believes in cross-curricular units.  Therefore, we will often combine TL and social studies together.  So, in a nutshell, don't be surprised if we learn about ancient Egypt in history, and read or study an Egyptian myth or piece in Total Language.  Also, the MLA format for citation will be taught in TL, but when students are referencing citations for Social Studies, they are expected to practice this as well.  In addition, Mrs. Smith does grade grammar and spelling in Social Studies writing pieces.  (This is not necessarily the case in hard to pronounce names or places on tests, essay questions or homework.  She's not THAT bad!)Wink

Ancient Civs!

Here we go.  This year we will begin with the Stone Age and progress through Sumeria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia, India, Africa, South America, Mexico and well into the Middle Ages.  If we have time, we will also cover the French Revolution.  Our blg project has been placed through April and May and will revolve around the Middle Ages.  Mrs. Smith as well as the other Middle School instructors will tie this concept across the curriculum to submerge the students into the topic.  The research paper will be a selection of the choices that Mrs. Smith provides for the students, but centering around the Middle Ages.  This year, we will study MLA research techniques/format in TL and social studies.  Check out the MLA reference page for more information on this research citation method under the TL heading!
