Previously known as Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo, on February 2, 2018, it was renamed Federal University Alex Ekwueme in honor of Nigeria’s late civilian Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme. The total area of land occupied by the University is 438 hectares. Student and faculty populations at the university are 10,000 and 2,230.

Of all the universities in Ebonyi State, there’s Evangel University, Akaeze (EUA), a private Christian institution. The Assemblies of God, a Christian denomination, owns it. The university received its authorization to operate in February 2012, and classes began on November 27 of that year for the 2012/2013 academic year.

Two colleges and one school were open when the university opened its doors in Okpoto. After its initial success, it was expanded to include three other universities until finally settling on Akaeze as its permanent location.
