The University of Uyo is a federal university located in the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Previously known as the University of Cross River State, Uyo, it was established by the Cross River State government in 1983. The National University Commission (NUC) granted the operational license to Ritman University on March 5, 2015, and academic activities commenced on November 23, 2015. 

The founder of Ritman University is Emmanuel Ibok Essien, a former Senator who represented the NorthWest Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State at the 4th Nigerian National Assembly (Senate) between 1999-2003.

Ritman University’s courses are accredited and recognized by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the governing body overseeing all tertiary institutions (Universities) in Nigeria. The University has a student population of approximately 1,000 students enrolled in its three faculties.

Procedure For Starting a University in Nigeria

If you have an interest in establishing a private university in Nigeria, there are certain procedures that you must follow before your project can be approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Here are the steps involved:

Prepare a Letter of Intent: The first step is to prepare a letter of intent which will be addressed to the Executive Secretary of the NUC. The letter should contain details such as the proposed name of the institution, its location, goals, vision, nature, and planned area of emphasis within the existing Nigerian university system.

Attend an Interview: After the NUC has reviewed your letter of intent, you will be invited for an interview. This is to assess your level of commitment.

Obtain Application Forms:If your written application is successful, you will be required to collect a packet containing 10 application forms. The forms must be submitted in person, and there is a cost associated with them (currently N1,000,000, but this is subject to change). Guidelines and other requirements will also be provided to aid and facilitate direction.

Pay Non-Refundable Processing Fee: After submitting the necessary applications, you will be required to provide a Bank Draft made payable to NUC for the non-refundable processing fee (currently N5,000,000). 

You will also need to attach a Draft of Academic Brief, Draft of University Law, Counterpart Deed of Assignment, and Draft of Masterplan. 

Additionally, you will need to provide a Certificate of Incorporation/Registration of Proprietors (along with Articles and Memorandum of Association), Letter of Available Liquid Cash, Assignment/Certificate of Occupancy, and a Bank Guarantee of Funds in the Amount of N200,000 from a Reputable Financial Institution. It is recommended that the final two items on the list wait to be obtained until the application process has progressed further.

Attend an Interactive Meeting: Members of the Planning and Implementation Committee of the university you intend to establish will be invited for an interactive meeting with the Standing Committee of Private Universities (SCOPU), which is a prelude to the first trip to the prospective university’s campus.

Submit Remaining Required Paperwork: After the interactive meeting, you will be required to submit all remaining required paperwork.

Review by NUC Experts: Experts from the appropriate NUC divisions will thoroughly review all submitted relevant documents.

First Verification Visit: A verification team will visit the proposed site for the university to verify that it meets the NUC’s requirements.

Revision of Documents: After the verification visit, proprietors will need to revise their documents based on the report by the Standing Committee of Private Universities of the commission.

Final Site Assessment Visit: Another team will visit the proposed site for a final site assessment.

Security Screening: Proprietors and the board of trustees of the proposed university will undergo a security screening.

Approval: The National University Commission board and the management of National University Commission will both need to approve the project. Finally, approval by the federal executive council (FEC) is also required.
